The Palestinian Party Regrets its Frequently Used Demo Banner in Indonesia
In a telephone conversation, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Palestinian Embassy in Jakarta, Taher Ibrahim Abdallah Hamad, explained to BBC Indonesia the reason the party issued an official statement containing the objection of the Palestinian flag flown in a demonstration in Indonesia.
"There are times when our flags are also flown in good events, such as Indonesia's independence day on August 17. We are grateful, but we do not want our flag to be raised by the anti-government (Indonesian) to trigger the conflict in Indonesia," he said.
He then cited a number of Palestinian flag-raising events, including in football matches in Glasgow, Scotland.
"If this is the case we agree, but in the demonstrations in Indonesia, hardliners carry our flags, we do not want anything like this," Taher said.
The phenomenon of raising the Palestinian flag in demonstrations in Indonesia was given the attention of Middle East observers from The Indonesian Society for Middle East Studies, Smith Alhadar.
He considered something reasonable if the Palestinian Embassy objected to the Palestinian flag brought to demonstrations in Indonesia.
"These demonstrators want to affirm their Islamic identity by carrying the Palestinian flag, because they consider the Palestinian case a religious issue, although we know the Palestinian case is a political issue between Palestine and Israel," he said.
Smith also considers that there are parties in Indonesia who deliberately exploit the Palestinian issue for his political interests.
"They want to be legitimated that they are Palestinian defenders who are perceived as oppressed Islamic groups so they identify them with (carrying a flag) Palestine, whereas the Palestinians are also plural, there are Christians in Palestinian society not just Muslims, Smith said.
In a number of mass actions, such as protests against Basuki Tjahaja Purnama for example, the protesters often participate in raising the Palestinian flag between the flags or symbols of their Islamic organizations.
The Palestinian flag also flew in front of Metro Jaya Police earlier this week amid the mass of the Islamic Defenders Front who supported the FPI leadership Rizieq Shihab in the case of alleged symbols of sickle hammers in the rupiah currency.
